I don’t see the problem. It’s their cheapest econobox and at that time they were still working on getting their design language cohesive. Of course it received the least amount of attention. That gen came around in 2005, when other Hyundais looked like:

2005-2010 Elantra

2004-2009 Sonata

Its funny, my phone likes to autocorrect "Miata" to "Mistake". This made me think of that.

That’s actually the bodystyle I have but from 2009. It was the swoopy, chrome-toothed Sonata that first got the benefit of style and then the other models followed afterwards.

If a good car is defined by something that gives you minimal trouble and is cheap to run, this is good in that sense. It lacks in pretty much everything else, although steering feel is surprisingly decent (i.e. I can actually tell if the front wheels aren’t doing what they should be).

If I recall, the Sonata got the new styling first, and the Accent was one of the last ones to get the styling treatment (I think even the Elantra and crossovers got styling updates first).

Yeah but the 2011 Elantra raised the bar for styling in the cheap compact segment.

Plus the hatchback versions of this looked cute! The sedan just looks meh.

That Sonata ran into 2010.

Agreed! I have an ‘09 Accent hatch and mine is base with NO extras (I don’t even have ABS or power ANYTHING), but it’s a reliable little runabout! :)

Mine is the midrange model (called the GL in Canada) and it has the power windows and A/C but there’s nothing fancy like cruise control, heated seats, etc. Even this one doesn’t have ABS; I think this generation lacks it entirely.

Have you had any issues with the knocking noise from the front suspension? I had to replace sway bar links with less than 50,000km on the odometer, but it's been fine ever since.

Mine’s a base model (I think it was called L in Canada...?), so no cruise, no power windows/mirrors/locks, no cruise, no heated seats, no A/C and no ABS (yup, I think you’re right about this gen not having it!).

The only thing I really miss from my old Subaru which DID have all that stuff is Cruise for long journeys and power mirrors when parking.

As for suspensions noises, yes....I’ve actually had it back to the dealership under warranty 3-4 times since I got it in April 2013 for suspension noises from the front. I forget what they all were now, but once was sway bar links, once was ball joints and once or twice they found the strut was loose on the strut tower (!!!). I’m hearing some rattles from there again at the moment, but I haven’t taken it in as I had a trusted non-dealer garage check it once when I thought I was hearing noises and they told me it was fine...
